On the 1st of November of 1755, a terrible earthquake struck Lisbon at 9:20 a.m., leaving almost 100,000 people dead and the city absolutely devistated. The earthquake was accompanied by a tsunami and a fire that burnt everything that remained standing after the shaking and flooding stopped.

In a timespan of only 5 minutes was enough to leave the city of Lisbon totally destroyed. Not only Lisboa was affected, but also the greater part of the western Ibearian Peninsula. The earthquake caused 3 tsunamis with waves of over 20 metres tall. It resulted in the death of 50% of the population and 85% of the buildings completely destroyed.

Other places that were even worse off were the Caribbean Islands, the English Coast, and the Western Coast of Spain, where the earthquake and the tsunamis left 6000 people dead. Seville was one of the worst damaged of all. Salamanca came in second, followed by Valladolid, the Huelva Coast, and towns such as Ayamonte, Huelva, Lepe, Cadiz, Conil completely destroyed, Sanlucar de BArrameda, the PUerto de Santa Maria, and Jerez.
