One of the most emblematic buildings in Lisbon is the cathedral. It dates back to the 17th Century and is one of the most important monuments to Lisboa.
After the reconquest of Lisbon over the moors, around 1147 the citizens decided to build the cathedral. Gilbert of Hastings, a bishop, was in charge of the construction of this great monument. The place that was chosen to build it was over a muslim mosque, over whose foundation the new monument was built.
The newest part of the cathedral was built in the 17th century and the second part in the 18th century. The earthquake of 1755 destroyed the royal mausoleum of Alfonso IV and part of the gothic chapel. At the beginning of the 20th Century, it was fully reconstructed as the building we know today.
